Gameplay Profile:
The Charachik is a fairly good example of conventional technology taken to a highly advanced degree. It sports a flexible, interlocking yet sectioned outer skin composed largely of a nanotube diamond matrix which disperses kinetic energy efficiently and not only bleeds heat remarkably well, but repels it. This gives the vessel and its occupants excellent protection from everything but a near miss with a heavy nuclear warhead, or a direct hit by plasma fire. In addition, the Charachik sports the complex, signature USH deflection system, composed of layers of cold plasma, maintained and kept separate by molecular circuitry in the outer skin.
Charachik Escorts are just on the heavy side of reasonable when it comes to armament, despite their smaller size. A pair of heavy, spinal particle beams gives the ship a frighteningly powerful punch at short range, shored up by a score of lighter missiles, as well as over a dozen tubes fitted to launch Voreekan-style, warhead-heavy torpedoes as well as heavy missiles. Finishing off the armament are a score of medium-light laser batteries and a half score of point defense turrets, providing medium and short range defense against mines, missiles, and drones.
While the Charachik lacks the small bays boasted by larger cruisers, they do posses a pair of mini-bays, each holding a sophisticated decoy on a trapeze.
Deployed more often in pairs than singletons, this well rounded warship can essentially hold its own against most raiders, but tends to have trouble under capital ship fire or when inundated with overwhelming numbers. While able to shrug off near misses from light nuclear warheads, a salvo of capital ship missiles can fuse the outer armor and seriously weaken the effectiveness of the Charachik's deflectors. In addition, it can fall victim to a death of a thousand cuts if confronted by drones sporting high density plasma weapons or medium kinetic penetration missiles, heavy enough to punch through its hull.
Per Dugond philosophy, while being able to run silent, the Charachik was designed to be seen, not hidden, and therefore runs "loud" under normal conditions.

Manufacturer: Rhombasd Yard Sails
Operator: United Systems Merchant Marine, Dugond Protectorate, Dugond Space Navy, A dozen or more members of the United Systems Hegemony
Lore Profile
This old ship has been in service for ages in the Dugond Protectorate. Although this makes it sound antiquated, its long running time is due to some very crucial principles that led Rhombasd to continue on very successfully in the realms of super-freight and, especially, pleasure ships.
This rugged design came out during the formation of the USH, and, in a move that was ironically revolutionary, Rhombasd took advantage of the components reform that was parallel to the formation of the USH. The Charachik used nearly all standardized components and offered the design directly to the member nations of the Hegemony. The second principle that they employed was a highly user-friendly yet secure operating system, including integrated gravitic controls because this was a Dugond company.
It paid off for Rhombasd. After a lengthy production run, thousands of these rugged cruisers were in service for various powers and uses.
By the time of the expedition, these ships were very easy to procure and cheap to retrofit. Scores of them went through the rift and into the Milky Way.
